Puppies may join this class as soon as they've completed their first three vaccinations. Mats are set up along with an exam table for the smaller breeds. Whether you plan to show your dog yourself or hire a professional handler, the experience of advanced preparation and practice is essential to showing your dog! Gretchen Brown has been teaching our Show Training and Junior Showmanship classes at Sunview Park since 1990. She was the Training Director for the Ft. Lauderdale Dog Club and is a member of the American Belgian Tervuren Club and the Gold Coast United Dog Club. She welcomes young pups, both purebred and mixed, who are too young for obedience class. They benefit greatly from early exposure and socialization with other people and dogs. If you're searching for a show prospect Gretchen can give you valuable information to aid you in your search. JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP If your child has an especially good relationship with his pet, or if he has trained the dog himself, then Junior Showmanship might be a good learning experience. Children involved in JS have the wonderful opportunity to feel a sense of achievement and victory, should they walk away with the ribbons after a show. Winning is not the most important factor here; the pride and responsibility the youngster feels at having reached the ring is surely worth the effort and discipline required to enter showmanship competition. Junior classes were developed to recognize and develop the unique relationship between a child and a dog, to encourage responsible dog ownership, and to secure a place for these youngsters in the Dog Fancy of today and that of the future, as they become adults. Juniors are judged on their ability to present, or handle, their dogs within the same formats and guidelines as those who compete in the breed ring. The quality of their presentation, not the dog, is judged. Juniors are encouraged to develop their handling abilities, dress appropriately, conduct themselves in a proper manner, and present their dog in a well-groomed condition.
